Room to Dream Bigger: How Saint Paul RiverCentre Is Helping K-Pop Take Center Stage

K-pop isn’t just growing—it’s bringing new audiences, bigger crowds and a whole new generation of fans together. And at Saint Paul RiverCentre, the surging genre is being given room (actually many rooms) to shine.

At the end of the month, RiverCentre will host KPOP MINNECON for the second time, a national-sized convention dedicated to celebrating all things K-pop and Korean culture. This two-day event will highlight K-pop music, fashion, dance, creators, and fandom culture, and will feature live performances, dance showcases, panels, workshops, exclusive merchandise, photocard trading, and interactive fan experiences.

Last September, the venue hosted the inaugural KPOP MINNECON, Minnesota’s first national-sized convention dedicated entirely to K-pop. The event welcomed approximately 2,000 fans from 16 states, and even attracted an attendee from the United Kingdom, along with dozens of local vendors.

And that was just the beginning.

This year, KPOP MINNECON has doubled its footprint, expanded to two days and welcomed vendors from as far away as New York. The entertainment lineup has also grown to seven acts, including the convention’s first international headliner, ICHILLIN’, traveling from Seoul, South Korea, to close out the weekend. “I can’t wait to hear that crowd,” Melendres said.

For Melendres, the evolution has been remarkable. Just a few years ago, their events drew around 100 fans. Then came 300. Then 800, with vendors growing from four to 20.

“We always have to stay ahead with planning. Honestly, the growth has exceeded what we thought,” Melendres said.

That growth eventually called for a venue that could do more than simply accommodate attendees. It needed to give the event room to evolve.

When Melendres and his team began searching for larger event spaces as attendance climbed, they needed a flexible destination capable of supporting a much larger experience.

They found it at Saint Paul RiverCentre.

A Venue That Grows with Your Event

For event organizers, growth can create a welcome challenge: How do you scale an experience without losing the energy and connection that made it successful in the first place?

At Saint Paul RiverCentre, flexibility is part of the answer.

KPOP MINNECON is using Roy Wilkins Auditorium for its main concert stage, while the consumer show takes place just a short walk away in the exhibition halls. That allows attendees to move seamlessly between concerts, vendors, panels and other programming all within one connected destination.

“I don’t know if we’ve had anything quite like this event,” Senior Account Executive Zach Foster said. “We can do the little event and the big and everything in between. That’s what makes us great in our size.”

For promoters, that versatility means more possibilities. A venue can start with the needs of today while providing the space and infrastructure to accommodate tomorrow’s ambitions.

“Saint Paul RiverCentre gives us room to dream bigger,” Melendres said.

More Than a Convention. An Experience.

Today’s attendees expect more than a room filled with booths. They want an experience.

KPOP MINNECON brings together concerts, meet-and-greets, panels, a vendor marketplace and more, all under one roof.

And as the K-pop audience continues to expand, so does the range of people attending. What was once primarily a young adult audience is becoming increasingly multigenerational, with pre-teens, parents and longtime fans enjoying the event together. The organizers have responded by adding features such as coloring corners for children and designated parent seating areas.

That kind of evolution requires a venue that can adapt right alongside the event.

“The RiverCentre is built for exactly that,” Melendres said.

A Community—and a Convention Destination—Is Growing in the Twin Cities

The Twin Cities may be an under-the-radar destination for K-pop and Korean culture today, but the momentum is undeniable.

KATSEYE drew an estimated 8,000 fans to Mall of America in 2024 before selling out the Armory in 2025. TWICE played Grand Casino Arena this spring, marking Minnesota’s first K-pop arena concert.

For Melendres, the real differentiator isn’t just the size of the fanbase. It’s the community behind it.

“One of my favorite parts is watching fans arrive as strangers and leave as friends,” he said. “Our fandom spans generations. We see teens, parents, and fans in their fifties side-by-side and it reflects the incredible diversity of this region.”

Instead of Minnesota fans traveling to Chicago or the coasts to experience major events, the Twin Cities is increasingly becoming the destination.

“Something special is happening in the Twin Cities,” Melendres said.

Saint Paul RiverCentre is proud to be part of that momentum.

The Right Partner for Events of Every Size

For Senior Event Manager Sara Peterson, who managed KPOP MINNECON last year and is a K-pop fan herself, bringing the convention to RiverCentre was an exciting opportunity.

“This type of event is rare in Minnesota,” she said. “I was hoping it would be us to host. It’s been a great addition to our events. Having these types of diverse events serves a community better.”

That commitment to diverse, dynamic programming is at the heart of what Saint Paul RiverCentre offers. From holiday celebrations and corporate conferences to consumer shows and national conventions, the venue is designed to accommodate events of virtually every size and format.

“We try to be that one-stop shop where everything is taken care of,” Foster said.

And for event organizers, that means more than simply booking space. It means having a team invested in the success of the event.

“You’re not just a transaction,” Foster said.

Melendres agrees.

“The RiverCentre team has been a true partner in helping us level up.”

Whether you’re bringing together hundreds of attendees or thousands, Saint Paul RiverCentre gives your event the space, flexibility and partnership to go bigger.
